The Turtle Bay Tree Fund: A Very Good Neighbor

Most regular readers of this newsletter are probably aware that the Turtle Bay Association maintains the trees and tree beds up and down Second Avenue in the forties and low fifties. Numerous articles have been written about the bulbs and begonias the TBA plants each year, and the cobblestone borders the Association tries to keep in good repair. But who takes care of the trees and tree beds on the cross streets? The Turtle Bay Tree Fund does.

Founded in 1965, this group is funded by private contributions, mostly from people who live on the maintained blocks, which are 48th through 51st Streets, east of Third Avenue, and Beekman Place. Their landscapers come once a week to water, remove litter, and make repairs to the tree-bed borders. In addition, they plant bulbs, ivy, and spring flowers in the 220 tree beds that make up their Tree Fund area.

Two years ago, former Tree Fund President Emmy Laboda relocated to Vermont, leaving the president's office vacant. An election was held last August and Bill Huxley won the position. Bill has been heading up the TBA's Tree Program since 1990 and is therefore very familiar with the Tree Fund's territory. Coincidentally, the CityScape Tree Service is the landscaper for both organizations, helping to make the transition a smooth one.

Next time you're walking on one of the Turtle Bay Tree Fund's neighborhood cross streets, notice the greater variety of plantings in their tree beds than we have on Second Avenue. Also notice that most of the tree-bed borders are wrought iron hoops rather than cobblestones.

If you would like more information, you may write to the Turtle Bay Tree Fund, 208 E. 51st Street, #238, New York, NY 10022.
