Greenmarket Returns
BY HERMINE MARIAUX

Spring always brings lots of things to look forward to, and this year we have one more: the re-opening of our neighborhood Greenmarket in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. Although Farmers' Markets have delighted city-bound New Yorkers since 1976, Turtle Bay got its very own Greenmarket only last year after completion of the beautiful park and its generous center esplanade. In 2000 the market didn't open for business until June 14, but this year regional growers will deliver their farm fresh produce to the stalls in the park every Wednesday beginning May 2.

At this year's opening, early offerings will still include some winter storage crops, such as potatoes and root vegetables, but will also likely include young spinach and rhubarb, and perhaps greenhouse-raised fresh herbs and arrangements of hyacinths, daffodils, paper whites and pansies. Forsythia and branches of apple blossoms may also be available. Subsequent seasonal harvests of homegrown fruits, vegetables, and garden varieties of flowers and plants will come throughout the summer and fall.

We received a number of inquiries about the possibility of a market on Saturdays as well as Wednesdays, but for the 2001 season the market will be open for business on Wednesdays only. (SEE EDITOR'S NOTE). Next year we can again explore the possibility of a Saturday market.
Various other products are featured at markets around town, including honeys, fresh baked breads, pies, cakes and cookies, homemade salad dressings, and flavored vinegars. If you would like to see these or other items at our Greenmarket, feel free to speak directly with the farmers about products in which you are interested, or let us know and we will pass your request along to them.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Since this article was submitted, we have been advised that a Saturday Greenmarket will commence on July 7. NYC Council on the Environment, the agency that operates the Greenmarket program, first said "no" then "yes."
