Spring at the Greenmarket
BY HERMINE MARIAUX
Spring is here - on the calendar and in the garden - abnormally
cool temperatures notwithstanding. And to witness fresh arrivals
at the Turtle Bay Greenmarket in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza Park, Mother
Nature knows it too, and will not be denied the season! Much to
our delight, the decision to not have a market on Saturdays in addition
to Wednesdays was reversed and thus we now have Greenmarket twice
The first field greens are here: Mesclun of baby lettuces, lush
Bibbs, even young Worrel for tangy soups and sauces. Leeks and local
green asparagus are here, a good selection of fresh herbs, both
cut and in pots, along with crisp ruby red radishes, and best of
all, fresh cut rhubarb.
Exciting new additions to the Greenmarket include breads, pastries,
muffins, cookies and giant brioches at the "Not Just Rugelach"
stand, and artisan cheeses by Cato Corner Farm. They'll even let
you taste before you buy . . . smooth and rich Bridgid's Abbey,
Wisconsin Colby, and soft and pungent Fromage d' O'Cow & Hooligan,
among other handmade treasures.
And if you have sworn off calories, there are geraniums, begonias,
pansies and impatiens to grace your balcony or window.
The Greenmarket is a treat!
