LES Ecology Center launches food scrap collection Wed. March 24 in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza

FOD-NY-ECOLOGY

The  LES Ecology Center-launches its food scrap collection this  Wednesday, March 24, in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza. Acting in partnership with NYC Compost Project and the Dept. of Sanitation, the program adheres to strict guidelines. A pioneer in urban composting, The LES Ecology Center operation is new to the Plaza, not to be confused with the compost collection offered by the Greenmarket prior to the pandemic.

WHERE: Look for the GREEN BINS  near the garden gate  and library box on the cobble platform behind Pink Moose cafe and observe the signs which clarify the rules.

WHAT IS ACCEPTED:

  • YES: Fruit and veggies, coffee, tea, nuts, grains and baked goods.
  • NO: meat, fish or dairy products.
  • NO: plastics or paper products, and absolutely NO dog poop!

WHEN: The bins will be open for collection every Wednesday from approximately 9 AM to 3 PM. After that, the bins are locked down to deter vermin and misuse until the Ecology Center collects the waste for transport to East River Park Compost Yard for processing. Finished compost is donated to community greening groups. As the program gets underway, more bins will  be added to meet demand.

LEAVE NO TRACE!

An expression used by hikers, “leave no trace behind,” applies to our park. In view of drastic cutbacks in city services, please join us to promote public health and cleanliness by disposing of trash and dog feces responsibly.

In April, we will announce Love Your Park Clean-up/Green-up dates. Those handy devices, “grabbers,” make it easy to pick up trash and debris without touching it and are available to volunteers. If you can lend a hand, please email FDHP.

GET OUT AND ENJOY THE SPRING AWAKENING!

The buds are swelling in the Katharine Hepburn Garden, and Spring officially starts today with the March Equinox. So get out and walk! Fresh air is free! Even a leisurely pace clears the head and tones muscles for greater strength and flexibility.

Send us photos to share of your excursions that include Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.

Please do your share to keep Dag Plaza and its Katharine Hepburn Garden clean and green in 2021 by supporting our efforts. Healthy parks make healthy neighborhoods!

We welcome your feedback: email fdhp@hammarskjoldplaza.org

Many thanks to these volunteers from Microsoft who Many thanks to these volunteers from Microsoft who helped at one of our recent Detmold Park cleanup days! We greatly appreciated the extra man/woman power! Microsoft made it even better by donating $37.50 for every hour that these volunteers worked, resulting in a donation of $525 to the Turtle Bay Association!

This donation was processed through the Benevity Giving platform - does your company offer this? We'd love to have you volunteer with us too!
